LATE NEWS – URGENT ACTION NEEDED

We have just found out that City Vineyard in Melbourne who purchased a large quantity of wine from us is closing its doors on 1st December.

They will be sending a few dozen of our award winning 2005 Arneis and 2005 Vermentino back to us sometime in the next 4-6 weeks.

If you would like to buy either of these wines at $20 per bottle – that’s a 20% discount, please let us know immediately so we can put your name on the list.

We won’t know until the wine arrives back here exactly how many bottles we have of each variety so if you give us an indication of how many bottles of each wine you would like to buy, we will do our best to supply that amount.  If we don’t have enough to supply everyone their full order, we will ration it out so everyone who wants it can get some.

October 2006

We have 4 white wines being bottled at the end of October - Arneis, Fiano, Pinot Grigio and Vermentino.  As usual we have only very small quantities of these wines - they will sell out quickly.  Click on "Order" tab for Mail Order Form.

Also now available - 2004 Nebbiolo.

June 2005

The excellent weather for this year’s growing season resulted in fully ripe fruit harvested about two weeks earlier than normal. Our vines are now seven years old and fully mature which helped the fruit flavours, sugars, acidity, tannins and colours to be spot on .

The first grapes picked for this year’s 2005 vintage were Chardonnay and harvested on April Fool’s Day.  We don’t usually make wine from these but sell them to one of the big producers where they are used for their top of the range wines. The quality was very high and an indication of things to come!  The grapes from our Arneis and Nebbiolo were the best ever. The Nebbiolo was used to make a red wine and rose as well as the base wine for a pink sparkler which will be available in 12 to 18 months time.

We are preparing to bottle the 2005 Arneis, 2005 Nebbiolo rosa and 2005 Vermentino and these will be for sale around the end of July. We will only have limited amounts of these wines available so if you are a regular purchaser or first time customer, don’t leave your order too late.  Our 2004 Nebbiolo rose is sold out and stocks of the 2004 Arneis are low.

Just to be different we are labelling our Nebbiolo rose as rosa from now on. Other commonly used terms are Rosato, Rosado, Novello-rosso,  pink wine and blush wine.

Wine lovers are really interested in our Arneis . That’s not surprising as the wine speaks volumes for itself,  but here’s what Philip White the wine critic for the Adelaide Advertiser Newspaper had to say in April this year, “……this beautiful, unctuous, hand- pruned, hand-picked, handmade lovely makes most Chardonnay look plain dumb.  Banana, peach and jackfruit blend in its lush wholesome fleshiness-it’s as silky, clean and syrupy as lychee, but finishes dry…..94 points”

Our Nebbiolo 2003 just gets better and better, in  the March 16th edition of the same Newspaper the reviewer wrote “…this juicy, audacious number. Its fruit like aniseed rings and blackcurrant gums; its palate sinuous and sensual; its tannin fine, perfectly drying and persistant…92 points”

What’s new ?   Vermentino and Negro-Amaro that’s what!

But more of that in the next update as well as what’s in store for our Pinot Noir?

SUMMER WINE SPECIALS
Our vines are looking great at the moment with some nice fruit. We will be putting out our nets in the next few weeks to protect the grapes from the birds as the fruit starts to ripen. At the moment the vines are going through veraison which is when they change colour and become softer and sweeter as the acidity reduces.

Now we need to make some space in our winery for the new vintage. So we have decided to mark down our white wines (Arneis and Chardonnay) and our Pinot Noir by at least 50%. The details are on the order page when you click on "Summer Wine Specials", along with a special order form. The special discount price is only available until 31st March or while stocks last so be quick and place your order NOW to avoid disappointment.

Screw caps

Customer feedback tells us how satisfied people are with the performance and ease of use of our screw caps.

It’s just so easy to open and reseal a bottle!  You don’t need a cork screw, no more disintegrated corks, no more broken corks pushed into the bottle, no more bits of cork floating in your wine glass, no more broken glass on the bottle top.  The days of extracting a super tight cork with a cork screw from a bottle between your legs are over !

We have been using them exclusively since our 2001 vintage in both our white Arneis  and red Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir wines.  At Parish Hill we’ve got your best interest at heart.  We want you to enjoy our wine in its peak condition.  We are divorced from the romance and emotional tradition of the cork.

Studies in Australia, Europe and America continue to show there is no question of the superiority of screw caps over cork in uniformly preserving wine freshness and avoiding the presence of cork taint.

Cork taint is the bitter, musty, unpleasant taste of T.C.A .(tri-chloranisole) derived from the treatment of cork bark with Chlorine during commercial cork production.  T.C.A. is leached from the cork in contact with wine in the bottle and presents as a musty bitter taste.  It is estimated that up to 10% of bottled wines may be corked regardless of whether the wine is cheap or very expensive.

Cheers

June 2004

Most of the wines have finished fermenting and will soon be cleaned up ready for aging. With Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir we use old wood for maturation so as not to hide the fruit flavours we have worked so hard to get in the vineyard.  We believe too much new oak in the wine is unpleasant and overpowering.

How do they look so far ?  Well the colours are intense and pretty but the flavours and aromas are still too raw to assess.

Our 2004 Arneis will be a blend of several batches, each of which used a different yeast to accentuate different flavours and aromas.  While it is early days yet it looks very interesting.  Everybody loves this wine. Our 2003 Arneis received 3 ½ stars in a tasting of Italian and Spanish varietals in the June edition of Winestate Magazine.   In fact the 2003 sold out within a month or so of bottling and we are holding advance orders for the 2004 when it is released later in the year.

What’s new ?   Well , we have set aside some Nebbiolo material for a rose sparkling wine in the methode champenoise style but more about that later.

Cheers

May 2004

We have been busy picking grapes, crushing grapes and starting to make our 2004 vintage wines. The flavours are good and we expect some exceptional wines.

Our 2004 Arneis will be bottled early this year and will be for sale around August. As our 2003 Arneis sold out in 6 months, we suggest you contact us now if you are interested in the 2004 vintage so we can let you know when it is available.

We normally sell our entire crop of Chardonnay to Beringer Blass but this year we retained a small amount to make a Chardonnay for us and our customers. It will be an unwooded wine, bottled early and available for sale about the same time as the Arneis. More information will be available closer to the release date.

April 2004
Tony Love from The Advertiser sampled our 2003 Nebbiolo prior to bottling and described it as "most exciting...it had big tarry notes on the nose, with Turkish delight and musk in the mouth and a soft tannin finish" (The Advertiser April 7).

Winestate magazine (May-June issue) awards 2003 Arneis with 3 1/2 stars.

2003 Arneis sold out completely.

Pinot Noir and Arneis grapes will be ready for picking soon.

Grapes are ripening with good flavours.
